Joel Matip’s season is over with Liverpool with the defender set to have surgery on a thigh problem.

The centre-back picked up the injury in Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park and he will miss tomorrow’s Champions League clash with Man City. And he is more the likely to have to sit out the remainder of the season.

“The operation is likely to end the 26-year-old’s involvement in the remainder of the 2017-18 season,” read the club’s website.

“Jurgen Klopp will provide a further update on Matip’s condition this afternoon when he speaks ahead of Wednesday evening’s Champions League quarter-final, first-leg clash with Manchester City.”

Matip was able to complete the full 90 minutes in the win over Palace, but he will need surgery to correct the problem.

Dejan Lovren is set to be recalled to partner Virgil van Dijk at the heart of Liverpool’s back four.

Klopp is set to give an update on Adam Lallana’s injury that forced him from the field against Palace, in today’s news conference.
